ESBS Story
The Egyptian Society of Breast Surgery grew from a shared belief that breast surgeons in Egypt needed a dedicated professional home for education, training, research, mentorship and collaboration.

The Egyptian Group of Breast Surgeons
The journey began when Prof. Gamal Amira and Prof. Ibrahim Sallam worked together to establish the Egyptian Group of Breast Surgeons under the umbrella of the Egyptian Society of Surgeons.
The purpose was practical: to bring breast surgeons together, improve access to structured education and create a platform for professional exchange across Egypt.
Courses, workshops, multidisciplinary learning, research and international collaboration were identified from the beginning as priorities for the new group.
With Appreciation
Support from the Egyptian Society of Surgeons
The Egyptian Society of Surgeons provided the professional support and organisational umbrella that allowed the group to take shape.
ESBS records its particular appreciation for the encouragement and support of the late Prof. Mohamed Farid, Prof. Abdelmoati Hussein and Prof. Khaled Safwat during the early development of the group.
The Society also recognises the later support of Prof. Tarek Ibrahim and Prof. Atef Abdelghani for the educational activities and continued development of the group.
2024 and Beyond
From an Idea to an International Course
The first major task for EGBrS was to turn its educational aims into a practical course that brought Egyptian and international experience together.
The First International Course
Building the Programme Together
Prof. Sherif Naguib and Prof. Emad Khallaf joined the early leadership as planning began for the first International Advanced Oncoplastic Breast Surgical Skills Course in 2024.
Prof. Walid Elnahas participated actively in the educational work, helping the group extend its reach and develop practical training opportunities.
Egyptian and international faculty worked together to shape a programme based on real clinical decisions, practical teaching and open professional exchange.
Learning Built Around Clinical Practice
The programme combined lectures with interactive case discussion, MDT-style learning, surgical videos and practical teaching.
This approach allowed delegates to discuss not only how procedures are performed, but also patient selection, operative planning, alternative strategies and complication management.
A Growing Educational Programme
Building Through Each Course
The response to the first course confirmed the demand for structured training in oncoplastic and reconstructive breast surgery.
Later courses expanded the faculty, practical programme and opportunities for surgeons from different institutions to learn together.
These activities also created the setting for educational research, needs assessment and stronger national and international collaboration.
A Programme Built Through Participation
Each course brought together surgeons, trainees, educators and multidisciplinary colleagues from Egypt and beyond.
The Next Step
From EGBrS to ESBS
The educational work of EGBrS showed that the need extended beyond individual courses. Breast surgeons needed a permanent professional organisation that could support education, research, mentorship and national representation.
Evidence from Practice
Listening to Surgeons and Measuring Need
The group combined its courses with training-needs surveys, course evaluations and learning assessments.
A total of 647 surgeons contributed to the educational-needs assessments. The findings identified important gaps in oncoplastic surgery, breast reconstruction, therapeutic mammoplasty, perforator flaps, fat grafting and MDT decision-making.
The evidence helped shape the educational programme and confirmed the need for a permanent structure capable of supporting surgeons beyond individual events.
A National Platform Taking Shape
The educational programme brought together colleagues from universities, cancer centres, Ministry of Health services, teaching and insurance hospitals, military hospitals, independent institutions and charitable organisations.
This growing participation showed that ESBS should serve the whole breast surgery community, creating a place where institutions can work together without losing their individual experience and identity.

Establishing the Egyptian Society of Breast Surgery
Following three years of educational activity, research and national collaboration, the founding members met to agree the next stage of the journey.
The meeting unanimously endorsed the establishment of the Egyptian Society of Breast Surgery, approved the proposed governance structure and authorised completion of the remaining formal registration requirements.
ESBS was created to provide a permanent national platform for education, training, mentorship, research, professional representation and international collaboration.
Our Work
Education and Professional Development
ESBS develops practical education around the clinical decisions, operative planning and technical challenges surgeons face in everyday breast practice.
Learning Connected to Clinical Practice
Courses and workshops combine case discussion, MDT simulation, operative planning, surgical videos, practical teaching and live surgical education.
Faculty discuss why a particular operation is chosen, how it should be planned and when a different approach may be safer or more appropriate.
The aim is to provide useful learning that surgeons can take back to their own clinical teams.
Learning Through Discussion and Exchange
Open discussion allows delegates to compare clinical approaches, question established practice and learn from colleagues working in different settings.
ESBS education brings together technical knowledge, clinical judgement and multidisciplinary decision-making rather than treating operative technique in isolation.
