Patient Safety and Clinical Governance
Live Surgery Governance & Safety
Patient welfare remains the overriding priority throughout case selection, consent, surgical care, educational participation and postoperative follow-up.
Core Principle
Clinical Care Always Takes Priority Over Education
Clinical responsibility remains with the host institution and the named responsible local consultant surgeon. Educational participation may be modified, limited or withdrawn at any time according to patient welfare, consent, operative findings, clinical circumstances and the judgement of the responsible surgical team.
Patient Care
Appropriate Case Selection
Cases are selected according to clinical indication, patient suitability, multidisciplinary review and institutional governance requirements.
Patient Choice
Information and Consent
Patients receive appropriate information regarding any educational activity and may decline observation or participation without affecting access to clinical care.
Operative Participation
Consultant Oversight
Any approved educational participation is limited, selected and undertaken under the direct supervision of the responsible consultant surgeon.
Accountability
Host-Team Responsibility
Clinical responsibility remains with the host institution and named consultant surgeon. Course candidates do not assume independent responsibility for patient management, operative care or treatment decisions.
Operative Candidate Participation
Approval for the Operative Candidate Pathway does not guarantee participation in a particular operation or operative component. Participation remains dependent on credential review, patient consent, case suitability, operative circumstances and the decision of the supervising consultant surgeon.
